Start with a normal day.
Where would you drink your morning coffee? How many people usually sit down to dinner? Do you want a place to read, space for a grill, or a table big enough for family? Write down your everyday uses before working out the shape of the deck.
Think about the walk through the space.
Picture walking out of the house with a tray, pulling out a dining chair, and heading down to the yard. Furniture and door locations give a layout something concrete to work around. If you have furniture you want to keep, bring the measurements to the conversation.
Notice what is already there.
Spend a little time looking at the space at different times of day. Make note of the view you want to keep, where you’d appreciate privacy, and how you currently use the yard. These are useful details when we talk about the layout.
Bring a wish list, not a finished drawing.
A few photos and a short list of priorities are plenty to start with. Share what you love about your home and what isn’t working outside. We can talk through the possibilities together.
